Have the following offers:

Uber: 410K TC + 60K signon over 2 years | L5a
Doordash: 387K TC + 20K signon | L5

Currently at G with 300K TC at L4 and 5 yoe. I like the team and have good WLB and likely L5 next year (TC will reach 350K then).

Worth switching for higher pay and level? Both of their offices are 30 mins of extra commute during peak hours.

  • If your mentality is to coast and maximize WLB, stay at Google. If you want to grow quickly and work hard at a hypergrowth company (and the potential TC that comes with that), then join DoorDash. If you want mediocrity across all areas then join Uber.

    • Yea the fact that co workers are literally making $2m a year to do the same work is so annoying especially if they joined around the same time but at a higher level or maybe a few months before

Lol. Uber mediocre, dd hyper-growth, will make you rich, will make you succeed in life, blah blah blah. All gig companies are right now at the mercy of world politicians, anyone saying otherwise drank too much kool aid

Uber and Doordash are not one of those pre-IPO companies who can offer potentially FIRE-amount equities. Switching jobs for this amount of bump is not much better than keep climbing ladder in Google, but IMO ladder climbing is not even worth it. Coasting at Google and use the extra time for day trading or side business would be better ROI.

L5A with 5 YOE is great! If you outperform you might reach L5B in 3 years. Then youโ€™ll still be a Staff level Eng with 8 YOE. Thatโ€™s badass.

That's really helpful. I also read that last year a lot of people made L5a so likely going to have more competition. Your take?

Not everyone wants the L5B promo. But Iโ€™d say thereโ€™s never a shortage of teams or projects to get the scope required for L5B if you choose to go that route.

The promo system at Google is fairly uneven and slow... Iโ€™ve had coworkers who took 3-5 years to go from L4 to L5, and not for lack of trying.
In contrast, Iโ€™ve seen coworkers at Stripe go from the equivalent of L3 to L5 in 3 years.

Yet Iโ€™d trust the Stripe worker to be more capable, as the amount of work and responsibility that goes into being an L5 equivalent is much greater than at Google, at least in my experience.

Ultimately, the promo system is one of the main reasons I switched, and it worked out well for me, as I got promoted much faster within Stripe.

    TC: $700k
