Why getting a job offer is random

Apr 6 4 Comments

So I recently signed an offer with a well-known company and currently going through onboarding.

Today, I received a resume rejection email for the same role. I found out that I accidentally applied for the same role with the same resume but with a different email. The rejection email states that they don't think my profile matches the requirements. Haha too bad I'm joining

  • Hiring is full of human bias. I was rejected for the same internal role by the hiring manager and hired one year later by the same HM for the same role. It’s crazy!

  • Even interviews are also random, you’re lucky if the question asked is familiar to you. Also with all the biases the interviewer may upfront decide to hire you or not, usually subconsciously.

Getting to screening is much more random. Resumes are notoriously terrible indicators of one's capabilities so most employers use the cheapest way to parse them.

Luck plays a big role in the recruiting process. Resume getting noticed by recruiter is luck, so is screening questions and interviewer mood, same for loop. So ya, it's crazy how much luck plays a role.

Adding a link for some interesting thoughts on the same.
