Hey Blind, My father who is 65 and retired 8 years ago is looking to get back to work (mostly because he really enjoys working and is kind of bored in retirement), but he thinks he doesn't stand a chance getting hired for roles. He's got a B.S. in Civil Engineering, an MBA, a graduate diploma in Marketing and Financial services, and a bunch of other financial courses and credentials (including now expired series 7, 10, 4, 63, 66 licenses). Aside from education, he worked in Finance for 28 years, notably in banks such as UBS, Standard Chartered, Wells Fargo, and Chase Manhattan (pre JP Morgan), with roles ranging from Chief Credit Officer, LATAM to Head of Structured Finance, Americas and other senior roles in asset management. Is my father right that no company is willing to hire a 65 yo? Or should he stop making excuses and start applying? If so, any referrals? He is very coachable, and is willing to hire his expertise and experience to tech, finance, and other related markets. Thanks!
Sounds like your dad should be mentoring and find a way to make money from that
He could teach🤷🏼♂️
Mentoring or look for consulting job based on his great experience. Maybe talk to some headhunters as they know of senior level jobs
There are a lot of botique consulting firms which would gladly put him on the poster and get more clients. It's gonna be a lot of travel and might not be on his terms. But if he's willing to do the search, do away with some requirements. He'll land something in no time. I worked with some with a similar situation(not necessarily with this background thou).
Your pops should go create his own consulting services
This says a lot about the ridiculousness of the FIRE movement. A career is not a jail sentence, it’s part of your connection to your community and society. When I read about 30 something year olds dreaming of retiring in their 40s I cringe at the idiocy of it.
Yup, I agree. For me (just some 25 year old whippersnapper), the FI is much more important than the RE.
Early retirement is a choice where you wanted to pursue your passions by not worrying about trading your time for living. If the passion is to continue remain doing good in existing job then no need to think about retirement. People dream about early retirement to not have a boss in their life
With the number of unicorns around - I’m sure people would pay a pretty penny for creative financial advice.
I’d consult it’s what my grandfather does at 80 besides board seats
May be real estate license could be lucrative and you are your own boss
Ask him to use his contacts he made during his tenure. My dad now 62 is working for a company who was the client of the bank that he used to work for before retirement . He got the written confirmation from the bank that he can work for the company. That way the people who worked with your dad will surely know his work and he can get consulting positions.
