So I wanna get into google/faang but I’m currently contracting at a hour rate of 80$ but google only offers 50$ for something similar UX design right now. Does it help you much to become internal at google if you worked as a contractor? Because I would have to sacrifice a good job I have now to please google so they hire me as permanent for the good rates.

Q #1 Anyone have positive experience with the approach or is it better to keep getting relevant experience and hope for an internal hire one day.

Ps. I’m shocked how low rates they pay contractors. Especially in design, top
coders might be different.

Sidenote: I do a mix of UX design and frontend development.
Q #2 Seems like frontend is much better rewarded at faang. Am I wrong?

I think it depends. I was formally a TVC (Vendor) at Google and a good chunk of my team had the opportunity to convert to FTE. BUT it was definitively a rare case. I still think I got great experience during my time there, but I only stayed in that role for less than a year before becoming an FTE at another tech company.

Bad idea to become TVC. Conversion is hard.

While working as TVC you will be intentionally separated from FTE in order to avoid employee-employer relationship with Google.

No team events, no feedback on your performance (must flow thru your agency and not directly), no coaching or trainings (again - it’s your agency responsibility), no attendance to Google-wide meetings (like TGIF), permissions to source code and documents be limited, even your office can be located outside of Google campus and supplied by agency.

Please also note that duration of your assignment can be shorter.
Once project priorities changed - can be easily cancelled or new vendor in cheaper area be contracted instead.

All of this is true and contractors (even highly skilled ones like UX designers) feel they're treated worse than FTEs but people do join / put up with it / convert to a FTE.

Our UX guy is amazing, almost does PM + UX for us. Got hired, promoted very quickly.
