Hey all! I'm C++ SWE working for bank in NYC, originally from London. I'm hoping to get h1b this year. Generally how hard is it to move on h1b? Do firms give less comp than to permanent residents?

Thanks

Well the firms do definitely use the immigration stuff to leverage the compensation part. You will often find yourself negotiating with your employers about the immigration part while keeping the comp discussions at bay. This in long term would have effect on your compensation. Having said that if you keep switching every few years you can smoothen the curve

  • It is hard to move, yes. Does not have much to do with compensation though especially with the prevailing wage requirements.

Difficulty arises from the sheer pain that comes with dealing with it. Forget about startups, small shops etc. They will scream and run away the moment you utter the words "I will need visa sponsorship". You will be interviewing exclusively with large enterprises.

And transferring across is also a nightmare. Like you will be waiting 2 months minimum after signing an offer letter before you can figure out your start date.

Oh and that is if you have one at hand. Getting your initial one is subject to lottery. Fun!
