I am thinking of getting a new laptop since my current Lenovo Thinkpad (8GB RAM, CORE i5) runs slow when doing modeling and it drives me up crazy.. what do you guys use and any recommendation?

Definitely not a mac. If you are involved in any sort of excel modelling then I would avoid using a mac at all cost.

CPU = speed of processing tasks. GPU for gaming or rendering but not Excel. RAM is for simultaneous tasks, and this is the bottleneck for most people. The size, complexity and number of the Excel functions are big eaters of RAM, and also most modern programs are horrible at memory management. I would aim for minimum 16 GB but 32 GB ideally would be good for your use case.

The Thinkpads, HP Elitebooks, and Microsoft Surface books are all very well made.

  • I think HP laptops are all pretty good when it comes to excel modeling
