Current Amazon L6 evaluating a move to Facebook/Google E6.

Distribution of SDE job family by level indicates that E6 at FB/G is ~10% of all SDEs. This corresponds to the distribution of L6 at Amazon. However, multiple blind threads indicate that L6 at Amazon does not correspond to E6 at FB/G.

My questions:
1. What job responsibilities for E6 at FB/G might not correspond to job responsibilities at Amazon L6?
2. Does E6 at FB/G report to M1 or M2 or Director? (I am guessing mostly M1 sometimes M2, but wanted to check)

Any insights would be helpful.

Are you a tenured SDE3? If yes, go for E6/L6
    Btw E6 = M1 at FB.

      Let me clarify my comment.
Amazon's SDE3 level is too broad. Newly promoted SDE3 are matched with E5s at FB and tenured (being SDE3 for 2-3 years) are matched with E6 level.
By tenured, I would also mean that you have atleast 8 YOE in total, since high levels like E6 require atleast 8 YOE.
Regarding the job responsibilities, yes, E6 at FB has the same responsibilities as an SDE3 at Amazon.

@jeezwhyos Thanks, makes sense. I think the aggregated data shows equal leveling. But I see and agree with your point. It depends on if you are executing on all the responsibilities for an L6 (which tenured would be expected to do) or if you were just promoted and might be still learning to fully execute on a few.

I think this might also depend on the org's bar on promo, since Amazon is a huge company with different groups run differently.

  • External E6 often stay <1 year and leave. If you are not there, I would suggest not to stretch too much.

I was an L4 SWE at Google and got an L6 offer from Amazon, so I think L6 at Amazon should be equivalent to L5 at Google.

I was up for promotion that cycle, so I got promoted too. They tried to sell me that L5 promotion was a part of the counter offer but I don't think so. My point is I should be L5 at Google at that time and got L6 offer from Amazon so these two should be equivalent. You can take it or leave it, up to you

  • Ex-Amazonian currently an M2 at FB.

Don't go by distribution and percentage, Amazon is bottom heavy versus other companies tends to have lot less college hires. For instance, FB has less than 10% of SDEs with less than 2 years experience versus Amazon 40%.

At FB, E5s are expected to drive Roadmap, project schedule, run day to day execution, handle customer/cross team questions, onboarding and ramping up new hires, and tons of 1:1s with team mates / cross-team. This is mostly done by SDMs at Amazon. Once you go to E6, you are doing this for multi-team level. On top of that, you still have to do oncall and your own deliverables.

E6 at FB is similar to your top layer SDE 3s which are generally reporting to L7 or an L6 with larger scope/multiple-teams.

I am a tenured L6 at Amazon leading 10+ engineers among 3 teams.

    I interviewed for L6 @ G
The hiring committee did not even consider me for L6
