Equity Research to Tech role Switch!

Dec 1, 2020 4 Comments

I’m currently a VP in equity research, looking to move out of finance to any role aligned with tech (could be fintech). Education background - Undergrad in CS/IT (~10 years ago) and MBA in Finance. Any thoughts on what are other possible exit options/strategy. #sellside

Should be easily be able to find something. Best bet would be to try Corporate Strategy or Business Development roles (which tbh is where you want to be anyway). I went the opposite direction (BizDev at a startup to IB) and let me just warn you what I think some things you take for granted in an established company can become a painful realisation at a startup.

    Good luck.

Best bet is product management if you’re happy to dive into implementations & strategy. With a technical background you could do really well. I was an AVP Credit Risk, Corp Banking before jumping into pa PM role, financial AI research.

    • Hi! Im in credit risk/corp banking thinking about pivoting into a strategy/finance role in tech. Did you have a technical background that helped you transition and how easy/difficult was your shift?

I didn’t have a SWE background but minored in Math & Stats + understood R. Did some courses post degree in Data Analytics & Visualisation, Product Management HCD, Web Technology & Infrastructure.

Don’t think it should be that hard, you just have to show confidence or willingness to learn where you need to develop strengths & software development lifecycle management.

Doing it via a Fintech is great, Cos you’ll have business context and bring value while training + upskilling.
