Imagine not discovering the world of furnished high end residential rentals. Donโ€™t listen to ass mutual. This is out of his league.

@hO8Bs4โ‚ฌ I fully agree. It's all about passive income. And the reality is we don't need a lot of it. Once you quit your day job, you can focus some day hours in your investments or other activities you enjoy more than your day job.

Disclaimer: I know a small minority of people like their day jobs. The rest tolerates it, dislikes it, or would much rather do something else.

One last thing, most of the people who selected the "more than 5mm" will not retire early. We all know it.

These surveys usually forget that time is limited and time is currency. If you can make 5mm by 60s, itโ€™s useless. You need to make it by 30s or 40s so you have sufficient time to enjoy the dough

@spaceX, welcome to the Indian way of thinking. We are forced to defer enjoyment to a TBD future point in time at any given point in time.

This is spot on. I personally feel my body function is degrading year by year and lowered my FIRE goal a lot.

FIRE is every bit as much about knowing what you want to *do* in retirement as it is about the number itself. Sitting on your ass playing video games everyday with $5M in the bank loses its novelty pretty quickly

      Thank you overstock

So , the key trigger is overstock stocks climbing up, using the money to buy new houses and renting away old houses
      Aug 23, 2020
    • Yes. I was well under way with converting homes to rentals and the warehouse but the jump in stock let me accelerate a few years and retire with more than I had planned.
The warehouse is on a ten year loan 7 years left). I am not taking any income on it to pay it down that fast. When it is paid off i will 220k from real estate. Until then i will be drawing on the equities.

I dont get the FIRE rush. Am I the only one who works because I like building things? Are you all just working for money? That's sad.

Not sure why people are waiting for more than 2.5mil in the US. Peoples annual SPENDING is more than 100k excluding savings? If you arenโ€™t putting money into savings, how would you spend 100k a year just on expenses? Iโ€™m genuinely curious. I have a completely different understanding of the FIRE number.

Based on one example, can anyone add some of their major expenses?

I think there are likely degrees of FIRE. For a long time I have had it in the back of my head that I want to be financially independent by the age of 50, because in the tech world, there is ageism and it does get harder to find and keep a job in tech. We are single income household (spouse already FIRE'd) and are doing a good job of saving, even with $14k/month spend. I think I have a good chance of hitting my goal. One question I have for people planning to FIRE, do you put money in 401k still?
      Aug 23, 2020
    • I do it because it's another stream of potential future income that is tax free, plus the employer match.
