What the hell is tier 1 tech anymore?

Dec 23, 2021 21 Comments

Previously my idea of tier 1 tech was basically FAANG.

Facebook/meta seems like a dumpster fire from the outside where a lot of people wouldn’t even consider joining. This may or may not be true but it’s just horrible optics.

Amazon 🥜pip culture. Toxic.

Apple I honestly don’t hear too much about apple in tier-1 conversations. Majority of their tech stack is old (I know this because LinkedIn also uses ember lol)

Netflix still tier 1 it seems? Still innovates and has top tier pay?

Google - I’d consider G tier 2 these days. Severe lowballing and downleveling is turning a lot of good talent away. Also heard it’s fairly difficult to get promo given all the internal competition. Super long hiring process. Just not really worth it anymore.

Which companies do you think deserve to be in tier 1?

Amazon - seems like they bumped pay up big. Not 🥜 anymore? Still toxic sometimes but you can find good teams that are less so.

Google - low offers because of the brand name. Shutters most of their products. Meh.

Meta - also raising offers lately? Stupid metaverse idea though.

Netflix - top tier pay makes all their other problems go away. Would sell my left nut to work there.

Apple - idk. I know nothing about them. Their new M1 chip is dope tho. That’s some legit goodness.

The offers I see people getting at Amazon are huge. Seems like if you have some experience and negotiating ability you can pull down a lot.

      Google agree

Meta agree but then you have to work for a company with a lot of sketchy shit.

Netflix pay is great but what do Eng even do at this point? Feels like very little greenfield, but could be wrong.

Apple comp is meh, propped up heavily by endlessly increasing stock price (but who knows future). Software seems mediocre, maybe if you’re in SEG or hardware then you’re doing cooler shit.
