  • Check SAT scores if they are published for the school and compare to other schools

    • I'm not sure I follow. My comment is about the school - is teaching effective on a standardized metric? Are my kid's peers going to be motivated and in turn motivate them? SAT scores seem to be a good and quick way to measure this. I would also look at things like AP participation percentage for the school but am not sure how easy those numbers are to come by

It’s a good way to surround your kids with other wealthy kids who can afford test prep. I wouldn’t read more into it than that, but I guess that might be important to people here.

It depends on your definition of a good school. I liked selective schools so I liked these schools in nyc more than 10 schools in suburbs. But some might disagree. 8+ schools in NJ are generally good.
Also if you are buying the house I would focus more on the high school. Make sure that they have a choice of ap classes

Don't kid yourself if you think you are going to get private education quality at a public school. Private schools often publish test scores in their marketing materials as a "sales pitch" because the difference is stark.

Most of the ratings come from standardized test scores. And then each one has their own tweak on a formula weighing class size, diversity, teacher ratios and masters degrees, and so forth.

Truth is schools can change due to teacher turn over and the principal.

Mainly your buying into a school with a high income, assuming that the people who can afford to live there are similar in the ideals of valuing education, that’s all.

Unless you know people who have kids in the school and can talk specifics, it’s a bit of crap shoot unfortunately.
