apartment suggestions NYC new grad

May 23, 2021 38 Comments

Hi blind,

Edit: Looking for a 1br

I will be moving to NYC for new grad swe job (200k TC) and was wondering if anyone knew any good high rises with nice views to live at. Budget is <3.5k. I want to enjoy first year in a nice building and then will move to a cheaper place. I have seen those really nice high rises with floor to ceiling windows and would want something like that. Anyone have any apartment building suggestions? #engineering #software #swe #housing

Studio or 1 bedroom? Will be tough to get a 1 bedroom in Manhattan under $3.5K unless it’s in a crappy neighborhood

Check out Long Island city. It’s right across the east river with great views of Manhattan. It’s prices somewhat reasonably for what it is, and commute to manhattan is about 10 mins. I lived there for a while in a high rise and loved it.

  • I would advise against spending that much with your income. I make twice that and only spend 2k a month on rent— granted I split costs with my girlfriend. If you want a high rise building- look in financial district. It’s pretty much the only option for that kind of apartment on your budget in Manhattan. Other options are Jersey city, or Williamsburg

    • I will also be splitting it with my partner but they make less than me so It would probably be 70-30 split.

My concern is I am looking for same exact thing as well. My partner will not be there for a while but when they are it will be split 50:50 and also torn since I want a higher savings %

  • +1 on Long Island City. New buildings with many Amenities, young people, great views on Manhattan (with the sunset), easy commute everywhere (you can go anywhere in Manhattan or Brooklyn in 25min) and if your office is in Midtown it will be 10min commute
