When Negotiating Salary, Do You Lose Leverage By Following Up?

Company made offer, KNOWING I have another offer and a very tight deadline of 48 hrs.

I responded asking for salary flexibility. They replied saying need to check with CEO and will reply: "Let's stay tuned!"

The recruiter is very young and so far, proving incompetent, although her actual response speed is usually good.

I followed the "Shut up" method. You say your piece, you shut up. However, it's been 1.5 days and no reply. I'm hesitating whether to followw up simply to ask for an update.

Do I?

I would follow up to check in. You can remind the recruiter of your deadline again. Sometimes at this stage it really doesn’t land on the recruiter, more of a business decision to move forward. They may not have responded because they don’t have a follow up but I feel they should have said something even if it was that they know nothing.

Either way congrats on two offers!

    Why would you lose leverage

You need an update because of your tight timeline, so ask for it.

    • OP your leverage is your supposedly "tight" timeline, what are you gonna say in 48 hours if they ask about the other offer? 😂

If you follow up unjustifiably after a day and a half, you can look pretty dumb, but you have a deadline that forces a decision. You would look pretty dumb not following up.

It looks like you have no choice but follow up. Remind her you will lose your other offer if she doesn’t get back to you ASAP. You may actually lose your leverage if you don’t follow up. Because if more than 48 hours have passed and you’re still interested in them they might start thinking you were bluffing or lost the other offer. But either way it may worth trying to stall the other company

Actually, I told her that to walk away from the other offer, I'd need us all signing by Weds.

Open to any further advice. Literally running out of time.

Which company do you want to work for? It sounds like it’s this one? In this case, follow up. Of course you don’t want to seem desperate, but staying silent just to a follow a theoretical method isn’t going to help you. Gotta adjust to the actual situation in front of you.

      Them (Company B).

I've been delaying Company A as I negotiate with B, but now fear A may rescind with delay. Have emailed both recruiter and hiring manager.
