I m beginning to budget for different expenses, and was wondering how much play
money do folks budget? Play money = non- essential fun including eating out, movies, travel ( not commute), shopping etc. i was thinking of 10% of post tax income.

i max out my 401k, but dont save much more beyond that (maybe $800-1k/ month). Being too stingy with money builds unnecessary anxiety in me.

I don't actively budget but my average is around 12-15% of my take home per month, which is after Roth 401k contributions, FSA, and insurance. It goes up a lot when I make big travel plans but I try to spend a lesser amount the following month to balance it out.

I would probably say 10-15% is a good range for discretionary spending.
