I know Expedia is not too strict about PTO but in my benefit it says I get 15 days of PTO. Should I use my PTO days before quitting? It would be great if I can get a week off before my next job. It would be great to hear everyone's thought about using PTO before quitting.

I'm in the process of leaving, so I'm pretty up to date on this. I was informed by HR, and read in their internal documentation that only positions with accrued vacation are paid out. Engineers are not accrued, so I was told they definitely would not pay out- I've been told since I started I have 15 days for the first three years, and 20 days thereafter. I've never once seen it written anywhere that our vacation is "unlimited." So... They're either lying, or it's more complicated than that :/

Oh weird. So a new hire can take 15 days and quit... they got around the law by saying it’s not accrued

If you've got enough of it at once the withholding may end up bigger than it should otherwise be but you'll get it back when you file.

You can’t cash it out because they don’t accrue. It’s “unlimited vacation” policy with a guideline of 15 days

If possible, you should take the vacation before you give notice. Once you are accepting an offer, you can usually give a start date a month or so out of you want to (so you can give notice when you get back). Also make sure to be reasonable, though, and not burn bridges for the sake of a couple vacation days.

Don’t unless you trust your manager extremely well. Your manager can be a dick and not let you take the time off.

I’m states that allow it (like Washington, but not like California), Expedia’s vacation is untracked. You have a target number to use, but it’s just between you and your manager.

I think engineers don't have the option to cash out. Only accrued pto gets the cash out option

  • Take the PTO cuz the PTO earns more PTO. Plus RSU vesting.
