Currently there is a clear leader (AWS), #2 (Azure), and #3 (Google) when it comes to cloud services (iaas, paas, saas). Will Oracle be able to realistically compete with top 3 in the near future?

    - 10%ish of the companies in the world has moved to the cloud. All the financial projection from msft aws and oracle predict a *100 factor in potential money to earn in the next 10 years.

    - some customers has particular needs. Some need multi users but not multi tenancy (data at rest etc), some doesn't want VM etc... So there is room to build a cloud to satisfy some specific needs (I would not say niche though)

    - to win big markets on big companies there are stuff that matters like price but also being on the same bill etc.. Oracle rich ecosystem, existing customers base and geo location will allow for sure to sell more easily that you think

Summary for me : I love aws, I love amazon, but like our VP said a while ago at amazon "azure will crush us one day but we will not care because market share will increase and we will be richer than today ".

AWS doesn't have the ecosystem it needs to sustain long term its first position. Innovation is good but as the cloud is maturing this is becoming less true.

Microsoft will be the most successful cloud for enterprise, AWS will remain the cool kid for small/mid companies and Oracle will be the leader for big corporations like insurance company and banks.

Being ahead only matters at the point when a customer is choosing their cloud platform. Over time newer players catch up to older players because they get the advantage of hindsight in what and how they build things to learn from first movers mistakes, and first movers run out of ideas and have to maintain existing things which is a lot of work. Only 10% of IT spend is currently in the cloud, so most haven't moved yet (most of their work loads, at least), and as long as secondary players catch up to AWS before those potential customers move, to those customers it will just look like an even playing field

Not to mention enterprises always want a contingency plan and so will make sure to use 2 cloud providers if not 3

Sslcert, because you see it with the eyes of an expert / engineer. Choosing a cloud provider isn't done by us, at least on the 500m$+ contracts.
Those contracts are negotiated around a cigar in a VIP club :) and I'm not kidding.
Also add Microsoft's rich ecosystem (SaaS and beyond) and the fact that they have so much offices over the world (it means they benefit from a huge network of sellers, evangelists and support engs) will make them win. Microsoft will win for the same reason oracle will too. Except Microsoft will most likely do even better in my opinion

      Lovemenot is right :)

I can speak for Azure -- we got a lot of good folks from there too. I was on Azure for 4 years

Good/bad doesn't matter and the perf diff is not that great for many of qualified engineers when you factor in all (eg bad managers, projects, ororg). People with more info about salary data or who care more about money (and who prepared for interview) moved to Oracle (work life balance in case of people from AWS). A bit risky move as AWS is stable and no 1, and Azure is growing rapidly. However, move to Oracle or not both make sense to me. World is not black and white. Some guys may come back to Azure two levels above.

Who knows what is going to happen in ten years. I care mostly how much I am paid now. MS guys, how much do you make? 61/62 is like 140 to 160k total comp for most people. 63/64 is like 200 plus minus 20. Same qualified people as MS senior will make at least 300k plus may be 50k depending on how you perform here at oracle.

I was in Azure compute team two years ago. Used to get 130 total. Yeah I know they got me cheap being on h1. Next year my total at oracle will be 350k. Hoping to cross 400k boundary after that. I did not even mention the kind of satisfaction I get on working projects that even MS principal would dream about. I used to get regular 3 rating at MS. Once got 5 too which is the lowest and you get no bonus. Over the past two years at oracle I got all exceptional rating. That tells you how MS underutilizes the devs.

So I don't care if Azure wins the cloud market on Mars. I will pick Oracle any day over MS. Would not even consider Amazon. You guys get stock grant that you won't see the next two years. It does not matter if your stock goes to 2000. Your average turnover rate is two years.

So no thanks. I am all set. You should consider moving to oracle too if you are smart.

Btw people who come from MS background are taken with a grain of salt at interviews. If you only worked on .NET stack you will face extra scrutiny from the hiring team. Make sure you are prepared for that.

Hey fellow msftee you know that pretty much everyone wants to work st google and fb, right? No need to state the obvious. Problem it is extremely hard to pass their interview. It may make more sense to study for short time to go to Oracle for bigger pay than studying and trying for years.

  • lets be honest, an engineer that gets two offers, one from G or FB and the other from Oracle, will most likely pick the firsts. Hence, the engineers that they were able to recruit are mostly those who could not get to G or FB. That says it all.

Just as data point. MSFT has 16% ERP market share (second to SAP), and Oracle has 13%.

Oracle has higher market share in CRM than MSFT.

MSFT is not existent in HCM space.

And we didn't even talk about NetApp....

Nice try @uth864g, come again when you've an HCM SaaS vertical.

I second this. Oracle will be #1. They already are in many ways. HCM, Integration with other HRIS systems and Taleo applicant tracking. IaaS, PaaS, SaaS. They have a full tech stack already and it's going great.
