Hi all,

I am currently a prodcut manager at FANG with 4 years of work experience.
I applied for pt MBA program to open doors, expand my career possibilities and network, boost confidence and potentially switch to management consulting. I won't be able to change location this year so location is not as a big deal but do not like the chill in Chicago.

I need to make a decision this weekend and would like to hear what people on this forum think about these two PT programs. Booth seems more prestigious, nationally well-known and a more diverse student body. But the faculty vs student ratio seems low and it's less a cohort.. Also i have heard from alumni that the program was not integrated as well into booth and weekend class selection is limited..

Berkeley seems a very practical choice to me given its network in tech /west coast but I worry the experience wont be as refreshing especially I had my undergraduate at a state public school on the west coast already.

Is my understanding of these two program correct? Recommendations?
Would really appreciate anyone from these programs to share your experience.

  • Honestly you’ll probably end up having the same successful career at either place :) MBA programs claim to be so different from one another as a marketing ploy.

Thank you. I am stressed through this decision making. I majored in econ for my undergraduate and always worried about opportunity cost when I make important decisions..

Curious on how MBA helps here. Given that you are already in FANG -
    1) how would mba significantly increase your salary ?
    2) why are you afraid of being managed out ?

i agree. I don’t think mba, especially fulltime mba, makes sense to me financially in the short term. I wanted to see what else outside tech and seems doing a mba might be a way to open the doors? I

A graduate degree would be worthwhile if you want to pursue an executive career path. However, a top 5 MBA is costly. I went the cheaper route and got an MS, with no regrets. The $200K price tag of a top 5 mba is too much of a financial bite, especially since I don't have executive aspirations.

You really do need to do soul searching to see what your career trajectory looks like.

You should post this question to the management consulting area instead of product management.

FYI, assuming you can keep climbing the ladder Investment banking > engineering (FANG) > consulting > medicine > law. There’s a post about this somewhere on blind where someone modeled the ROI for each path.

Also, I know Amazon loves MBAs, but it’s not the case in all FANGM. Which not switch to another company and do an internal transition?

If you want top 5 prestige in your MBA program, then Berkely is not it. Haas might be in the top 10, but the list fluctuates yearly. The only other west coast school that is consistently in the top 5 or top 10 is Stanford.

Booth and Kellogg are both always in the top 5, which is why I'm assuming you're looking at Chicago.
