Mobile/Frontend as career

Oct 24, 2020 8 Comments

How do you think about ios/android/web frontend engineer as career? I currently work on one of them and feel like upside is limited. I always felt like the industry value Backend/data/AI engineer much more and frontend engineers can be replaced easily.

Should i change my domain?

Upside is limited - yes. At one point you will have to grow breadth.

Replaced easily - no. Market demand for frontend experts is huge and won't change much likely.

Exactly what Google just said, market demand for FE is insane right now, I’ve been trying to hire for 2 senior-ish FEs for months and every good candidate has offers by the time of their onsite

Are you still looking for front end engineers?
If yes, may I know the location and expected YOE? I know a couple of them who are looking for a job change, I can refer them. Please DM me if interested.

Harder to get to staff level as a mobile engineer, but senior mobile engineers are super valued and in very high demand. I have 8 years of Android experience and my inbox is getting blown up year round. Not a brag, just a reality for any experienced mobile engineer.

Also, do you enjoy mobile development? Worry more about what you enjoy doing and less about arbitrary "growth"

  • Most apps are front-end heavy while backend is just CRUD endpoints + AWS until you grow to big tech size where scalability becomes a concern.
