As the title and username says. My job frustrates me even though my wlb is nice with <30 hours work weeks and pay is relatively high for my 5 yoe as a L4. Need suggestions on how to mentally improve myself or deal with rest of my life as a SWE
here are main pain points
1. Everything moves slow with tons of doc and design doc and convincing stakeholders for anything I want to do. Like I could have done the work itself much faster than all the bureaucracy and see if it really is useful. I hear google is slow compared to Uber so seriously curious how Googlers don’t go crazy. Maybe smarter coworkers help?
2. Politics. My observation is that people don’t objectively care about the impact of the work for company/revenue. Rather, if it benefits them in their perf/promo so I should jointly optimize for stakeholders perf and my perf instead of high quality work. They are not always the same
3. Not objective assessment of engineers. Probably not limited to SWEs but lots of things outside of my control influence my career. my manager at previous company left when I was L3 and it delayed my promo by more than a year. Former manager left before the cycle he was going to nominate me. I’m worried if current manager leaves in great resignation as I’m close to promo.
Are these unique to my situation? I guess not and they are in every mega corp or occupation. How experienced adults deal with these? Are they valid concerns?
TC 330 or 300 for granted vs current stock price
