@dski I had an offer for Akamai several years ago but stayed at ibm due to tc not overcoming the commute. The people did seem chill but googlers I’ve interviewed with have also seemed chill. Can you elaborate?

To advance quickly at any company, you want to be on a high growth project. 5-10 years ago, that meant you needed to be in MV for goog and not a satellite office, but I’m guessing that remote work + expanded capacity in their satellite offices may mean that it’s more feasible to be in a satellite office and progress quickly. Goog has traditionally hated remote work, so I don’t know for sure though, and I don’t know anyone in their Boston office anymore.

I don’t think there’s a difference between the people working there, it’s just that Akamai is Boston based and google was not, so there were more opportunities in Boston for an engineer at Akamai.

  • You would have a better QOL as a garbage man in Indianapolis, then you would as a SWE in BOS.

Motional, loved the joke, but really? Big tech pays perhaps 10% less than the Bay Area, and no metro in the country has more tech jobs than the bay, NYC, and perhaps Seattle or DC.

QOL here sucks generally due to winter and shitty commutes, but the tech scene is at least decent don’t you think?

  • Work remote for a bay area or NYC company. There's no good local options in Bos unless you're happy getting 150k with 10 yoe.

Just leaving this for anyone that stumbles on this thread later, Bos has plenty of solid places to work in tech. My Goog offer for Bos was actually better than my one for MTV after accounting for taxes (only 20k diff). At Ab Initio new grads are starting somewhere in the ~150 + 40k signing bonus range and you can get up into the mid 200s with good perf after a couple years

We are hiring. Compensation is all cash and can be pretty close to what Google is offering depending on your YOE. WLB is super chill

It's a well established private company, no stock is given out. I was talking about TC, so the salary+bonus is gonna be lower but comparable to G's salary+stock+bonus (a Cambridge offer from G, not Bay Area)
