I’ve worked at a few big tech companies and at all of them the engineers are always rushing to meet deadlines, tensions between dependent teams are high, there’s always a fire to put out, everything seems like a P0. It’s exhausting. Industry attrition is only making it worse right now. Is any eng org managing this better?

What you call a shitshow, I call fast iteration. There’s a reason the dinosaur companies take forever to make a product and it’s ultimately mediocre anyway.

Companies like IBM don’t have this sense of urgency. They’ve built a legacy, mature product and are milking the crap out of if.

I had what you described while I was at Amazon. I don't have anything like that now at Twitter. I'm sure we have orgs like that, but none that I work closely with

Hmm, I am also at Twitter and it’s a total nightmare of bad tech and intense dependency stress between teams. Quite a few teams at Twitter have pretty terrible WLB, unrelated to on-call type issues. I would say out of the 3 big tech firms I’ve worked for, Twitter is the worst I’ve seen so far, and the majority of engineers feel the same way. Twitter pushes aggressive marketing of WLB but it’s not really true. Maybe for junior SWEs, but for L6 and up Twitter is a constant fire fighting stress and drama culture and the super minor subset of people who say otherwise are just too small of a proportion of the company to give any real weight to their opinions.
