7 yoe

Coming from an almost no-name company, did ok in the interview, but probably didnt do as well as most Microsoft/fang/etc-targeting devs my age. Was underprepared leetcode-wise. But i think my background in cloud gave me bonus points..

Anyway..
7 yoe; Microsoft Reston VA.
Offered a SWE2 position (does this mean i botched the coding portion?? possible lol. they said there is 2 promos between my offer-level and a senior role.. and one level below me would be SWE1. so i think this is for a level 60?)

Base: 133k
Stock: “0-13k RSUs per year” they told me
On-hire Bonus stock: 45k, w/ vesting schedule
On-hire bonus -cash-: 20k, no strings attached
Annual Bonus: 0-20% of Salary

Any help is appreciated!

Also— team seems cool..any thoughts on how MS division Azure is??

I would join, regardless of ur 7yoe, having a fang name on ur resume is too helpful. Azure is not bad they got the government contract recently, they're not going anywhere.

No backing lol. Did not get an offer from Amazons cloud team when I interviewed 6mo ago. Granted I half-***ed that interview which motivated me for this one. But no other offers on table.

I don’t know much about comp markets, so I wanted to do a run-by to see if anything sounded irregular. RSUs sounded a little lower than what I’ve seen other 7 yoe SWEs getting (i think?) but i know every situations different

It seems like a pretty good offer. Bonus stock could be higher. Do you plan to negotiate?

  • Side question: Has Microsoft secretly increased the base for each level?

So you think that base figure is pretty competitive for the level offered and my yoe (7yrs)? Also do you know if Redmond pays more than Reston?
      Dec 9, 2019
    • Sure, the question was not really for you. Yes, I think the base is quite good for level 61. No idea about Redmond <> Reston

Base is good (in Redmond terms), stock and annual bonus are standardized. On-hire stock could be higher, but probably not in a no-name case like yours.

Azure is a great org to work for, but it's also big and diverse - there are better and worse teams. Get it, and if you don't like, you can always change a team.

      That sounds good thank you.

The team sounds pretty reasonable and sharp. When you say change teams, do you kind of mean, change products all together (ie depart azure), or another team within azure. Basically, is MS pretty easy to internal transfer / are they eager to hire Ms employees from other divisions?

Org, such as Azure, consists of products or services. Each product or service consists of teams working on it. Sometimes it's one team, other times it's more.

You can switch a team, within or outside of Azure, preferably across products. It's doable and common, but not super easy - you need to have good reviews and go through a whole loop of interviews.

I work in Azure and it's almost always people from other orgs, who want to join Azure - not the other way round.
