I am burned out by this job and I think it’s time to quit. However I have no other offer at the moment. I’m thinking about taking 6 months off, chill, workout every day, start a blog about tech/personal finance, spend time with my parents who are in a different country and maybe start studying for some interview.

I come from tech and eventually I want to go back to tech, finance is too crappy.

I don’t have a family (just a gf), no mortgage, no major expenses and $3M net worth (no crypto, all in VTI/VXUS).

A lot of personal connections told me it’s crazy to quit without another offer. What do you think?

Age: 34
YOE: 10
TC: Soon to be $0 😀

imo at 3m net worth, the marginal benefit of any further increase in nw is not worth the damage to your mental health

Do it. What’s the point of 3m if you’re still beholden to fear? I’ve quit multiple jobs without offers. You won’t make good life moves until you give yourself time to reflect on what matters for you. After these 6 months, you may realize that you might want to coast, work remotely from Europe, or start farming cabbages.

  • OP, I fantasize about this every day. You should consider taking leave so you have the chance to get back to your job/keep that card on the table.

Similar situation, work for a pos bank. I'm steps away from leaving and taking 6 months for exactly the same reasons with nw ~250K. At this point, I don't give af. PhD in applied math and 5 yoe to plug in numbers in a spreadsheet and email them off to people who know less concerning what to do with the information. When I was hired in, it was all talk of ML, distributed systems, algorithms (even the interviews where focused on that) but it just turned out to be administration. Want to leave tech and finance altogether, maybe 6 months to find something new.
