I worked at a startup earlier career. It was really fun when it grew but turned hell when it went irrelevant. I also lost half of TC in worthless stock options. Also, the startup was less recognized so I got cold shoulders from outsiders. People who left for big companies such as IBM and Oracle are considered winners, which hit my ego too.

After that, I exclusively applied to and worked at FAANG companies and alike.

I noticed in the last years a few friends moved from FAANG to startups with big titles such as staff and senior staff. I started to wonder if I am missing out all the fun. I wonder if I should include more startups in my next jump. Would you do so?

It’s a lottery at this point in startups

  • Tbh as someone who is currently at a startup in early career. I want to do what you did. Personally I think you learned earlier than most that when startups are great, they are great. However when they fizzle out, it becomes a hassle and doesn’t offer many exit opportunities.

Why join a startup when I can get more money guaranteed at FAANG? Startups give less stock and say it will multiply, Im not falling for that lottery ticket crap. Also cushier perks and better engineering/scale at FAANG.

Do it because you’ll enjoy the experience, not for the off chance that you’ll make millions
