Asking for a raise, as a contractor, WFH, on my six month mark

What do you think about my asking for a raise at my six month mark? I pay for my phone and internet, my two monitors, my work chair, all used to perform my job WFH. I get no reimbursement. Plus, my day-to-day costs of electricity, sewer, gas, food, water, coffee, have all gone up. I’m also working more as lines are blurred and I’m not to submit OT. So I’m thinking it’s only fair I ask for an increase. Plus, I’m making an hourly wage that I was back in 2006, chump change. And no PTO or vacation time.
Please comment. Yes, I’m grateful that I have a job at least. Boss is high maintenance. Can’t use Outlook at all. I’m her EA.

So if you're getting a 1099, you're being misclassifed. Which is illegal. You should consider filing a form SS-8 with the IRS to get back the taxes you're going to have to pay.

I will get a W-2 as I go through an agency. The agency bills them, say double the amount they pay me. I ask the agency for the raise, not the people I actually work for.

  • Always ok to ask but focus on your increased value not your costs. No one cares about your cost, they pay you for the value you create.

They told me the contract is binding. I said the contract says I’m to report in the office and I’m never to work remotely so that contract was breached by them. Lol. Previous two contracts I was given a raise in the first month. This is the first time I haven’t. Last two I was paid OT regularly. This time I was told not to put down OT. That I should stop working if I approach OT. I’m being paid a lot less on this one than the last two. And my cost is higher from working at home. I think it’s totally justified.
I think FTE’s should get $ too, because their costs are up as well. It’s not just contractors. But most FTE’s get to expense their phones and printer toner. I can’t even do that.
If they want to fire me for asking what I feel is the value I bring and justifying my extra cost, let them. Let someone else deal with my boss. She is the most difficult out of all of them.

Don't ask unless you want to get fired. Six months is too short to ask for a raise.

Find another job if you think you are not being treated well.
