I'm planning to buy an used X5 or MDX.

If someone owns or recently bought 2012/2013 X5 or MDX can you please comment on the pros and cons and what maintenance cost I'm looking at? Cost when we take the car to local dealer instead of BMW dealership.

I know if we don't own these premium cars it's easy for anyone to say that maintenance is too high but it's preferred to hear from those who actually owns it. Seems they have a clear picture regarding the maintenance and the cost associated.

Do NOT get the BMW. Old BMW SUV’s are a nightmare to maintain. There’s a reason you don’t see these cars on the road after a few years of age.

I see, that makes a bit more sense as besides the X5 the rest of my cars rarely had more than 50k miles although I'm going to stretch the Q7 as far as possible.

  • Why wouldn’t you look at the cost of ownership for the 5th 6th years on Edmunds or something like that

  • Unless you are absolutely aware of the owning history of the two cars, I don't see a good choice here. The cars are almost 7~8 years old. You will be facing major maintenance (battery, timing belt for MDX, transmission oil change, brakes, tires, electronics, spark plugs, and so on). These are not cheap items. You are looking at about 5~7K to cover all that. Certainly, if you are lucky, it may not happen to you. But, nothing lasts forever.
If I were you, I would look for a new one or 2~3-year old, which may last longer. Also, you will know your car better. There are plenty good choices of vehicles right now, depending on your taste and budget. The bottom line is I don't see a bargain here.

    • Those maintenance items you described for the MDX are a little over 1k on drivetrain, a bit over 1k tires, and a few hundred for brakes. It's not 5k.

    • If you can find anybody willing to change all those items for MDX for under 5K, please let me know. I am willing to ship over an MDX and fly over to take the bargain. The parts (OEM quality, not fake) alone are already 2~3K.
