At Uber, the title of the employees is visible through every platform. Even when you message someone on slack.

What pros and cons do you see in this for the employees and employers. Why do you think some companies like Facebook hide the titles? Do you find the title showing culture positive or negative?

Please share if your company exposes the titles. If so, to what extent?

  • FB hides the titles, think it’s a net positive for us.

A lot of companies don’t hide titles, I personally think there’s no harm. Most people act professionally enough to not be an ass just because someone is lower level. And for those that aren’t professional, they will be mean regardless of hidden or visible titles.

Titles help me know the functional area/expertise of the person I’m talking to. Uber’s titles are still a quite messy in my opinion anyway so I don’t feel suppressed with titles.
If we showed levels (L3 vs L5), then I would consider that problematic.

I've always assumed that job title is public information within a company. It's pretty important to understand someone's scope of responsibilities, and if they meeting them. It helps answer questions like:
    - Can I rely on XYZ to design this system?
    - If not, do they or their manager need feedback about that?
    - How quickly should I expect XYZ to ramp up on some new tool?
    etc..
