Amazon L6 Sr PgM - asked me for TC expectations in first email

I applied for a non-tech PgM role and was contacted by a recruiter who emailed me a list of questions to respond to, including my TC expectations with a single number or range, and said I need to provide a number to proceed. This seems odd to me, but from some of the things I've read it doesn't really surprise me that much. I would rather have this asked to me verbally instead of as a condition of continuing my application process.

From what I've read, it sounds like the range for a role like this is probably $175k-220k. I have 9 years of work experience as an engineer in manufacturing and operations and am wrapping up an MBA, so I think it's safe to aim for the higher end of this range. I'm thinking about saying my TC range is something like $180k-250k to push the conversation towards the higher end of the range, even though it sounds like I'm likely to get pushed back down towards the middle of that range. Is that reasonable, or am I looking at this wrong?

Are you sure you have to put the amount? You could say “market rate” and have the conversation later in the process

The prompt in the email says "Please provide a number to proceed" so I'm guessing a lot of people were responding by saying they're open to the market rate.

Wow that’s ridiculous. Well whatever you put at your low end that’s what they will start with

Range is almost surely much higher than what you’ve guessed. I’d be surprised if the top of the range was not *at least* $300k.

Top of range for experienced, technical L6 product managers at Amazon is >$350k. Program management is probably similar, if I had to guess. May depend on whether it’s an AWS or non-AWS role.

    • You are right - I am L5 PMT@Amazon making 230K. L6 PMT will make close to 300$K and if it’s L6 PMT ES - they make close to 350$ - L7 is higher and much bigger spectrum.

TPgM band is generally a bit lower than PMT band and I would say 20% less. With non tech it 20-25% less depends on the org.

I maintain what I said. You’re very much selling yourself short if you assume the range is $175-220k. I’m all but certain that it’s higher, especially since bands for all roles are almost certainly going to get wider in the near-future (and have already widened for some roles).

Even for non-technical, I’d be surprised if it doesn’t go to at least $250k. At the very least you should share a range that is wide, and say that your decision is going to be based on a variety of factors as you evaluate multiple opportunities.

  • Start with higher end of the range say around $220k

  • You got the range right - you can aim around 200

Hard to find good info. Levels.fyi says TPgM is ~$255k median, but it also has the average salary over $160k, which is above the salary caps I've seen for that level. That might be biased by local TC numbers from NYC and the Bay area where the caps are higher, so the TC numbers are probably higher than I should expect in other regions, or for a non-tech role.
