Been working at Microsoft as an L60 for one and half a year (1.5 YOE in total) due for promo to L61 in the next year - comes with small pay bump
I am comfortable with my team at MS and would have to explore a new field at Google.
Got an L3 from Google for 20-30K more
( did not mention Microsoft refreshers are 5K while Google refershers are 50K )
Would I be foolish to reject their offer since I would be placed in same level as some newbie?
If worth mentioning Google interview was much harder than Microsoft. Lot of unknowns and random shit.

I had many SDE2 offers at 1.75 YOE, some 300+ TC. If you go to Google you’re screwing yourself out of title AND comp.
Title likely matters unless you’re able to go from Google L3 directly to senior at another good company in the same time it would take you to go from SDE 2 to 3 while not going to Google. For example, is it more common / easy to get a senior level with 2-3 more YOE at Google L3 vs 2-3 more YOE as SDE2 at an equivalent company? Even if the title doesn’t matter per se, you should get more and better experience working as an SDE2, which will help your resume and in interviews.
Yeah, you can get promoted to L4 at Google, but only after working your way back up to secure the scope and level of impact you are already capable of handling. Besides, promos aren’t entirely in your control so you can’t bet on it.
I made this exact move myself and you can start applying to L5 externally after 3 years
If you go to Google now, it’ll take you 1.5 more years to get to L4.
The alternative is to stay at Microsoft until you get to SDE2 and then apply to SDE2 positions externally.
Knowing myself though, I’d take the Google L3 offer. Congrats buddy!
