How much bigger is the earning potential for quant traders vs quant devs at top firms? I’ve read that trading is very performance dependent, but realistically how much more can you make as a junior trader - is the ceiling much higher?

If you are good, you'll make a lot more as a trader with a good contract. Quant devs have a lower variance and lower median but it's easier to hit the heart of the distribution

The problem is you probably aren't good at trading and, if you are, you'll flame out in four years.

If you end up not being great at trading, do you know if it’s easy to make a lateral move to quant dev if you already have previous quant dev internship experience?

Quant devs means different things at different companies, so hard to say. I did AVX, asm and weird latency optimizations as a quant dev which you definitely are not even close to touching as a trader.

Big tech also definitely does not count quant trading as swe experience

At other places quant dev means mathy swe so 🤷

What experience do you need to become a quant trader? Can a SWE switch to become a quant trader assuming they are good at probability/stats?
