New guy I referred ended up getting higher salary than me at same level

The guy I referred negotiated more salary than me for the same level position as myself (~10% more). He has the same work ex, while I have worked for almost a year in this company & performed consistently to impress my manager.
Now, should I let my manager know that I have been unfairly treated or to readjust my salary according to market standard, or just keep my head down, prepare and switch, as they really don't seem to care anyway ? I did try to mention them to increase my compensation, but they barely increased of peanuts. This was before I came to know that the new guy is getting way more than me, with same level of work ex.
What's the best response - I don't want to increase any friction between management and make my own life rough , when I can continue to peacefully work. Been a year working here.

PS - I didn't go finding his comp, he chose to rub it over me showing off.

You referred someone and he joined at the new market rate. He got 10k extra. Is that something to lose sleep over? This will always be the case no matter where you go and if someone joins after you. So will you remain sleepless forever?

Let me put it to rest for you. No the manager can’t give you a raise other than the usual merit change that happens at perf. No the manager can’t promo you just because your friend for 10k extra. No the manager will not raise your salary just because you ask. If you so badly want a raise then go to another company and get a new offer. Just be ready to leave again when someone else joins and gets 5k more than you. So stop being foolish and living in a fantasy world and either learn to live with it or just go to sleep.

The manager can do a lot. No one is going to pay you more just like that it's all about leverage. A job offer will give that but then that hardly going to help you

Got it. But performance is not an issue, since manager has complimented my work. And they did give an annual raise - but it was peanuts. Shall I ask again to match salary with industry.

Bringing up other people’s compensation changes the conversation for sure. The last time you asked your manager they guessed that you only needed a little more to be satisfied, but they probably didn’t know that your expectations are closer to your referral’s new salary.

Relative pay is not always correlated to merit, especially in short time frames.
