How much are they paying you for L64 in Microsoft? And what about 65?

To get L1, you need to be in current company for 18months.

L1 have some limitations, about the duration you can stay, and also remember if you plan to come in L1 your salary won’t be high, it will be very less, because you are coming on business visa - if you plan to stay in USA for longer period then you shall try H1 - because if you think you can come on L1 and then get transfer to H1 it will be little time consuming and difficult too, plus companies will suck up your money

    • I transferred as L1 and don’t think the limit of stay is different than h1b excluding green card part. And the salary caught up very quickly (in about a year) and you could then slowly transfer to H1B when the time is right.

  • It is not difficult in Microsoft like other companies if you are well prepared and have visa then keep applying and following up with HM.. you should be able to land quickly.. there is no such restriction of number of years

Visa for internal transfer is relatively painless because you apply for L1 instead of h1b.

Having said that, internal hiring process at msft is no different than external hire, except you get to apply for positions that are marked internal only. Phone screens, full loops etc all that. But you will be competing against 100s if not 1000s of other internal candidates based in Redmond so it can get harder. It's easier to move to a team you will already be working with here in Redmond.

@zzz is correct. Internal is L visa and painless. Key is to establish good rapport with Redmond and wait for right opportunity. Don't tell Mgmt immediately. But do tell when ready for move. Mgmt support would be key as well. No harm dropping hints in career 1-1s here and there.

What happens to the stocks..do.i get according to us standards or same as what I have in India?

    • I transferred as 60 and the stock is universal I think. The salary might be a bit lower of the band but would easily caught up if performance review is good.
