Title says it all. What do you think if you are not from deepmind.

  • You should be thankful that there is some org out there pursuing pure research in AI. Academia has its own issues and industry is a rat race. Who is going to solve AGI if not places like DeepMind and OpenAI?

Also, DeepMind is solving real world problems in the short term such as Protein Folding.

I should not have said "end product" above. How about this, I am skeptical that deep minds protein folding code will be useful for science. Winning a competition is different than producing scientific insights. To win the competition to some extent they could memorize the type of data at hand. Since the model operates as a sort of black box, it is hard to understand the results when applied to real life, meaning real scientific data.

    • Research and technology demonstration is a necessary first step to productization but it not a sufficient step. All of the technologies that are in production today were born in research labs. This includes semi conductors, databases, distributed systems, Compilers, computer vision, networking and the whole frigging internet. There were doubters and skeptics in every step of that way. Thank God that the researchers were able to see past the short sighted skeptics. Now the SWEs can sit in their arm chairs, collect $500K+ in TC and wonder what the heck they do back there in research.

I think Google has overestimated the value that AI will bring over the next 10 years. Even within applied science, projects seem to be prioritized if they somehow use "AI". I believe this results in a sort of internal brain drain, leading to products that underperform in terms of basic features and reliability.

The current AI is nowhere close to AGI but it is pretty awesome. For example, learning to describe pictures, learning from image captions, writing an article given a topic. However, it depends on how Google uses this technology in real products. For this, I would actually back Apple or Microsoft.

That solves some real shit. Not like playing games or anything.

    • Google uses a lot of models developed by DeepMind. Eg- WaveNet is used in Google Assistant.

This is same as saying is NASA solving short term real world problems (assuming leaving Earth is not necessary in a short term) forgetting that there is literally an article on Wikipedia listing spinoff technologies by NASA.
