Transitioning veteran comp advice

May 5, 2019 21 Comments

Hello, I'm transitioning from active duty USAF as an E-6 after 7 years and have been interviewing around SV. Have been getting good results and currently waiting for offers after recruiters have told me I should be getting them from Twitch and FB. What kind of comp should I be expecting and do you guys think my .mil career experience will count for 'years of experience' in terms of compensation?
Field is netsec/incident response btw.

Weird that they didnโ€™t give you a ballpark first. The offer shouldnโ€™t be a mystery. You should know what your market range is. You should also know what they traditionally pay.

They usually tell you along the process.

Do you have an idea? Did you discuss a ballpark before getting to the offer stage?

    • Yeah good point, part of the problem in my field is that compensation varies so greatly. FB said they pay on the same scale as their SWEs but non-FANG types offer like 90-130k TC. So you can see how I'm kind of confused about what to expect.

Thatโ€™s your answer. Ask for the same as a SWEs.

Why are you leaving the Air Force? Donโ€™t you get a guaranteed pension if you are there for 10 years? Why leave before qualifying for it

In 20 years, you can get retirement pay. But usually at the 10 year mark, youโ€™ve made your decision. The military is great but civilian life is more lucrative and has more opportunities.

I was in for 10 years. I left because I was able to make more than the physicians I was working with, day one, out of the military.

Money was my biggest motivator. Education was second, and finally โ€” I knew I wanted a job that allowed me to have less risk, be home more and grow with my kids and family.

Oh did not know it was 20 years! That is way too long. Social security qualification is just 10 years.

DM me if you need advice. I left the Navy after 10 years of honorable service in 2012. I joined tech straight out of the military.
