Bloomberg interview experience (SSE-NYC)

Sharing my surprising virtual onsite experience.

I was expecting 2 interviews based on Hackerrank codepair style. 1 design and 1 hr interview if I got there.

First round I solved 2 questions. After which interviewer presented with a 3rd problem right after 55 mins of the interview. I was surprised as there'd be only 5 mins to solve this. I clarified and got to know that the interview was 1.5 hrs and not 1 hr. Solved all 3 problems correctly. One of the interviews even asked to execute my code to show that it worked as expected. They asked me to wait for one more interview.

Second round was with 2 team leads with 1 hour of system design discussion.
At the end I thought the interview was over but I got to know at the end that there there will be one more round. They didn't say HR/engineering so I assumed HR round as I already spoke with TLs. I kind of did okay in this round and the interviews seemed satisfied with my answers.

Third round - 2 different team leads presented themselves (surprise!) and asked me a more difficult system design question. I was barely able to solve it and answer the hypothetical questions. And in the end they said that was all the interviews for the day. I don't think I impressed them in any significant way. I'd say this was the poorest round of all.

My question is, is it common to have 2 different system design interviews for SSE role? Do you think I still have a chance despite not getting to the HR round? Fwiw, it was 4:30 by the time the last interview finished.

  • They may schedule further rounds with HR and senior management. I’d be on the lookout for an email from your recruiter asking to set time up. If you did as well as you say you did I think maybe they just have multiple teams under the same department/group with headcount and want to see where you’d rather end up (like giving you a choice of teams) if you pass both teams.

I had something similar but it was a lot more scheduled than these surprise interviews.

One thing I thought was odd was that they only asked you to execute/test your code for one of the three coding problems. I had to do it for every coding problem I had.

Good luck! I hope it turns out well for you.
