A little nervous about switching jobs

Aug 30, 2021 21 Comments

Worked at Microsoft close to 6 years. Have above average TC, a great team who are kind and respectful, cool problems, and TBH an easy job where I can slack a bit.
I recently accepted an offer at another company that will increase my TC over 60% and is up-and-coming by industry and community standards.
The reason I'm switching is because I feel like I'm not learning as much and the tools and processes are old and outdated for the industry, and because I wanted to increase my TC.

Now that I accepted the offer, I feel really nervous that I might be leaving a team of good people for a "greedy" reason.
Anyone else feel like this? How do you get over it?

TC:
-old: 187
-new: 300

It’s good to explore and be uncomfortable. That being said, it’s quite possible you will miss your old job and maybe even regret moving.
    But that’s life.

  • I’m definitely experiencing this. My boss and skip left the door open and wanted to push for a retention offer. But I was too comfortable and started to feel like I was stagnanting. Too early in career for that to be okay so I’m making a big jump to higher expectation company to a higher role etc and now wondering if I’m pushing too fast. Hopefully it’s just the pre-start jitters

    • Good luck with the jump! It looks like a lot of people have these jitters and we can ride it out :)

If it helps, from personal experience, the jitters eventually pass as you onboard (hopefully in an environment that’s fairly welcoming and not toxic) and it’ll just be imposter syndrome all over again. 😅

I think it’s healthy to not get too comfortable in an industry like ours.

      You’ve got this!

Kinda the same. I'm doubling my TC in the company I'm going to start working soon and kinda scared of the expectations and new technologies outside of Amazon

    • I feel you! With these big companies, there is some stability and community that is a given...I guess every change is hard. I'm glad there are more people who feel like this.

Yeah you're not alone. I think we're sacrificing the easy life to grow and at the end no matter what happens we'll gain some valuable experiences.

Same feeling as you, old team is very friendly, laid back, lots of freedom, above avg. pay, but not learning much. Got a new offer with 30%+ higher pay, comes with uncertainty, maybe some hustle. Well, I told myself it's time for a change, otherwise in 5-10 years I could be kicked out in a "re-org" because I'm old and out-of-date.

  • Unless you tell your old tc and new tc , don’t expect answers here
