2 months ago, I got fired from my startup because my manager hated me. Our company merged with another and there were lot of surplus people after the merger. My manager took this opportunity and fired me. I am on H1B and I had 60 days to find employment otherwise I’ll be out of status and will have to leave the US. I interviewed in many places one of them was Amazon. I failed the first Amazon onsite interview but the manager there liked me and advised that I should apply for a different role and they setup a second round of interviews for me. In the mean time I got a job in another small company. I took it so that I reset the 60 day clock. Plus there was no guarantee that I will pass the second Amazon interview. I started working in the small company and now I cleared Amazon interview and got an offer. The pay in Amazon is obviously much better and so is the tech. I just feel horrible that I have to resign from the smaller company. They helped me. I don’t know what should I tell them. It’s just such a bad situation to be in.
I'm with @S57. You are a business and you are providing your services to the best client you can get. Especially on H1b if it's a no-brainer. Take the better paying job that is very stable financially. Think if we hit a slowdown 4 years down the line and you have only 2 years on your H1b... It is much more difficult to get a job then as no one wants to hire a person with only a year or two left in H1b. My friend is facing this issue.. So, make hay while the sun is shining.
If you stay, how'd you feel when you ask yourself daily what if you joined Amazon back then. If you leave, you feel horrible once, if you stay you'll feel horrible many times
Always... Think of yourself first. Companies will find another employee but it is not worth risking your visa status
I wonder if you could negotiate a sign on bonus with Amazon and try to pay the start up back for whatever they may have invested in taking over your H1B? I don’t know if it’s standard process, but worth doing if you feel really guilty. But agree with everyone, do what feels best for your career. You aren’t being selfish, they will find someone.
That’s good advise .... yes .... this will be an ethical thing for me to do. I can at least offer so that their loss is minimized. I am getting very good sign on bonus from Amazon.
Thanks Apple. I love the new core i9 32 GB Mac book pro. Will be buying one from the sign on bonus as well. You guys rock!
Companies cannot accept payments for sponsoring visas. Nor can you not take salaries and make it up. Just move to Amazon and tell them you are doing so. Also tell them how you feel. They are professionals and they will understand. If they dont, you were right quitting anyways.
The small company wouldn’t hesitate pushing you under a number of metaphorical buses if it would help their business. Good luck at Amazon!

If new employer revokes offer when you already resigned at current company
It happens. You’ll burn that bridge for sure, but if you explain you are headed to your dream job at Amazon to work with better tech that’s the best you can do. If you stay just realize that if this small company hits hard times, don’t expect them to be as concerned for your well being when they lay you off as you are right now worrying about how they will react to some great news in your life...
