A strange introductory call at McKinsey & Co.
On Monday I received a LinkedIn message from a recruiter at McKinsey. When i reviewed the job post they sent (Digital Marketing Strategist), I was surprise to see that one of the qualifications was 8 years of experience (in which I only have about half of that). Ignoring the fact, I reached back out as I was super excited to get the ball rolling on this. I responded within 20 mins, but didn’t hear back.
Fast forward a couple days later, I still hadn’t received a response. I started wondering if they made a mistake by reaching out to me, but I followed up regardless. Fortunately the recruiter responded and we had scheduled a call for today. I then asked if I should send my resume ahead of time, and they said that it was not needed for the first call (which i also found very weird).
Fast forward to today, we had finally connected and I felt as if the call went very well. The recruiter did clarify that the years of experience reflected in the job post isn’t necessarily a driving factor and they’re more interested in finding people that fit the position in a more “intellectual” way. I felt a bit relieved thinking that okay, maybe they didn’t make a mistake reaching out to me and that they are interested in exploring me for this role. So we continued the conversation, and ended on a good note in that the recruiter will reach out with updates by EOD tomorrow. As soon as we ended the call, I realized they didn’t ask for my email. And now I’m just wondering if they’re just continue updating me via LinkedIn DM which I feel is a bit strange.
I’m not sure if I’m just overthinking this, but this whole introductory stage just seems a bit off to me. What do you guys think?
