slack’s stock isnt growing. i bet a large part has to do with the perception that teams may dominate slack.

how do you guys feel about this internally? hows the morale?

Honestly unless you're directly in Sales (or legal now I guess haha) we really don't think about Teams much in the day to day. We're working on a lot of interesting projects that take up a lot more brain space.

Obviously people aren't thrilled about the stock price, but that has more to do with the fact that we can't seem to articulate our value proposition than anything to do with Teams directly.

The problem with Slack is it's designed based on user metrics, and most users work at small companies. As a result, Slack sucks at managing large amounts of people/channels. For example, I found that you cannot mute a noisy channel without also muting @ mentions of yourself in that channel. And most of their "integrations" involve bots spamming channels to add even more noise. It's all about fluffing up the engagement wasteland that most small companies pose.

Whereas Teams is crafted mainly around how Microsoft employees probably chat with each other everyday. Features for people who face a constant firehose of emails and chats. Teams also uses ActiveDirectory identity, and its "integration" involves other Microsoft products having Teams support coded directly into them. Like click on a name in an email, start a chat, that kind of stuff.

What small companies!!! They're now supporting IBM, Amazon & Verizon with Amazon going to be close to 1M users.

Slack has more large companies using their product Enterprise-wide than Teams does. Check out the Teams UserVoice; it's riddled with crazy administrative issues that Microsoft has no intention of fixing.

  • Teams is growing cause it’s offered for free to a lot, right? That’s what I understood

They're now supporting IBM, Amazon & Verizon with Amazon going to be close to 1M users. Their only problem is they can't appeal to traditional non-tech enterprises because those companies are encumbered with proprietary Microsoft technology for decades and Microsoft is making sure that they transition only from Outlook to Teams thus leveraging their already existing customer base.

But then there's also so much growth in tech going forward which is why it's not all that bleak for Slack just yet and both them and Microsoft can thrive together in this space. They just need to become profitable and worst case someone acquires them.
