Do companies already have practices like this? I am sure Google does, considering how often they sunset working products.

Are any companies actively incentivizing or rewarding individuals for sunsetting or PIPing low-performing products/features?

HotelTonight used to celebrate features we killed by adding them to a "RIP" wall. Simplicity is a key value of the app, so we regularly removed features that weren't pulling their weight so that we could try new things. There was no program that incentivized it formally, it was just added to the culture started by a couple PMs. It's easier to do that with small teams.

  • Build products no one needs or cares about -> Sunset them later claiming it did not get adoption -> Get promoted -> Rinse and repeat

I believe incentives should be given only for being right about your assessment whether the product will do well with no repercussions for building products that don't do well. Rewarding any other behavior will lead to people building things for the wrong reasons.
