  • It's not permanent remote. The thread title is misleading.

Leadership is simply saying that they're not forecasting the return to the office anymore. Instead we're going to WFH until they say "come back to the office", and at that point there will be a 30 day grace period until we're all expected to be back in the office.

At this point it is clear we are never returning to office. Permanent remote is the new normal

  • 30 days notice to return to office at the end is pretty insanely bad. I think it’s fine to basically say “we don’t know” and stop giving frustrating updates every month or every time the reality of the virus changes. But if you’re going to do that you need to give employees a huge grace period to organize their return - like 12 months notice at minimum. People may drastically alter their housing situation, child or elder care, etc. You can’t just avoid making those alterations because you could be called back within a month at any time.

My partner worked at Microsoft for 15 years and it never has been a "remote first" type of company under any of its CEOs. Nadella believes that "work from home blocks innovation, teamwork and productivity."

Like so many other companies, when COVID does finally abate, Microsoft will be more flexible allowing employees to work from home several days a week. Of course, there will also be some exceptions for fully remote employees with special skillsets.
