What do you think of people who complete a non-degree program at an elite university then indicating they went there?

I ask because I did some training at an Ivy, but realize it would be resume inflation to say I attended. I make it very clear on my resume it was not actually physically attending the school.

However, I do see people with MIT or Harvard certificates branding themselves as graduates of these schools and you have to dig a bit into their LinkedIn/Resume to find it was an 8 week course.

Do you think less of a candidate doing this?

Edx/MITx Online course certs are to actual University/MIT degrees as Honda Civics are to Ferraris. Completely different products. Any working teenager can buy a Honda Civic, but only a select few can obtain a Ferrari. The materials and quality control are different, resulting in totally different speeds/presence on the road. You can be proud of any car, especially if you worked hard for it, but don't try to up-sell it to someone like it's a Ferrari unless it is one.

Listing it under education: This is OK. Calling themselves a "graduate": not OK, if they just got a certificate or attended a few classes.

  • Everyone is an asshole at some point. It’s just a matter of when and how much.

Beyond that I can’t say I’ve ever had a real opinion on the matter. If I am interviewing a candidate and they prove to be competent and convince me that they can do the job well, learn and grow then I am not concerned with their credentials. Of course that only works for certain professions but I think you get what I mean.

That's a great way to go about it, assuming that they could make it past resume screen among ones with inflated credentials tho.

I also hear people showing off that they stayed at Hilton when they actually stayed at their 2 start Hilton Garden Inn property which is more close to a motel.
