I'm a software engineer with close to 5 years of experience in full-stack and back-end systems, as well as some ML experience. I'm looking to break into product management (like many are). What is a good way to score interviews like APM at Google or RPM at Facebook? I've been applying online or via referrals, and then getting in touch with recruiters via LinkedIn. I am finding it difficult to get call backs to interview for these roles, let alone actually get through the interviews. Kind of demotivated.
They can’t waste time on interviewing you if your profile doesn’t stand out. Does your resume reflect you are making effort to make that transition happen? Not trying to discourage you but ask yourself if you would hire someone with your profile or an MBA grad for that position who might have done PM internships. You need to do some small PM projects on your team and that will help get calls.
I agree, been tailoring my resume to stand out. But the APM and RPM roles look for diversity in their team, and I know of them going to software engineers, UX designers, Physicists etc. So was looking for some hard insight on what these junior roles (that don't necessarily expect PM experience) might expect to see on a resume, that I maybe be able to add to my resume. Cheers!
Why go for PM? Why not take on more responsibility as an engineer on product, where you hold more weight? I’ve been told your best bet is to do internal movement, especially if the team you’re on has an opening.
Thanks! Yeah I'm exploring internal movement options too, though hoping to move out of Oracle. There is not much opportunity to work on different things on my team. I could look for another engineering gig before moving into a product role, but I'm trying to make the switch to PM sooner rather than later in my career. I've grown a little tired of engineering tbh, possibly because of my current monotonous workload.
Any luck on the transition OP? I’m in the same boat.

With that much experience wouldn't you be able to transfer to a PM role? Those focus on new-grad hires no?
APM is for new grads strictly, FB RPM welcomes some industry candidates (current PM, consulting, banking). However, in my experience FB PMs hold less weight against Eng, but oversee broader product areas.
Yeah I thought APM at Google may be for new grads only. Transferring into a PM role at Oracle is not easy either, especially in the current climate. @yutub Any insights on what specifically Facebook RPM might like to see on an engineering candidate's resume? They claim to be background / degree agnostic, but of course they must value certain things on a resume. Or does the resume not matter and you need to hustle to get to know someone?
