My university mate who has an ASIC background graduated with me 1 year ago, he has been hunting for ASIC jobs 6 months prior to his graduation, but all he has had is one interview call which unfortunately didn't get converted.

Folks, who graduated within last years and working in ASIC/VLSI/Digital Design/Verification, how did you get in? Any recommendations on how to get interview calls?

Not looking at suggestions like:
- move to Software
- connect with recruiter/hiring manager on LinkedIn and ask directly
- get resume tailored
- get some internship exp.
- get some professional certs
... none of these work or are already done.

Can take this suggestion, but doesn't seem an immediate game changer to get interview calls.

Man it's tough. But at least the market is doing good. Intel is hiring a lot. Is he not applying to companies outside of bay area? Referrals really help
BTW I went to a state uni as well, no prior experience.

I had a friend in a similar boat. What worked for them was postponing graduation to work (almost volunteer) for a professor for ~1 year. They ended up adding an entire end to end chip cycle on their resume, which skyrocketed the number of calls they got. Had their pick with multiple offers at the end.
