Hey everyone, I am pivoting my career to software engineer. After recent interviews, I got 3 offers. 1. AWS Devops is based in Seattle with TC around 180k! 2. PayPal Compliance focuses on fraud detection and is based in San Jose and with TC 140k and 25k annual refresh! 3. Austin Local company focused on full stack (Python+React) with TC 155k. More background information: I am a data analyst for a year and a half and I don’t get a CS degree. I just do leetcode and start interviewing. I hope I can develop my engineer skills in the next 2 years while start and complete Perm/140 process. For Amazon, I am worried about Pip problem and Seattle weather. I really want to learn more about engineer and I know there are a lot of talented people! For PayPal, I am afraid that the team will be more of data science and I am not really interested in data science anymore. For the Austin local company, I love the weather and the company culture. I just live in Austin and I met every team member and they are so nice. The only concern is they might not be as technically strong as Amazon/PayPal but I guess with a good wlb, I can learn more by myself. I would appreciate if anyone could voice their choice and provide the reason! I would like to go to Amazon but I am so afraid of PIP. Thank you!
AWS over these other options!
Thank you! Did you know anything about this org?
It is big org but your other options are not great to not join Amazon. Amazon is not great but better than other 2 choice you have. Plus, if you don't like your team you can change from plethora of teams in Amazon without any cooling period. You can switch teams on day-1 at Amazon.
AWS is huge so you could be placed anywhere without us knowing the team name but best not to share it here.
Thank you! Delete the sensitive part!
OP can I DM you? Curious about your preparation without any engineering experience. Congrats on the offers btw!
No problem! Feel free to do so
YoE?
I just have 1.5 YOE being a data analyst. No engineering background and experience.
Ok what's the level PayPal SJC offered you and what's the base in it?
AWS for career/skill growth .Good luck
Thank you! If a team is somewhat knew, is it a good signal to join in ?
How did you get calls with Data Analyst experience? Curious about switching to SWE from DS
I filled some cs projects and asked for referral all the time. I was targeting entry level positions and the result actually was pretty good!

Is your offer on Paypal for a Software engineer? If it is, then Paypal will be a good company for you to learn not just related to your job, but other skill sets too; there will be plenty of time you can learn what you want, and there will be training sessions regularly too. You can ask your PM or EM to assign you stories on other technologies. I am leaving Paypal soon, but Paypal did help me with my career upgrade
Edit: I just read you got a position at Data sciences. Then I suggest you go for Amazon. It has good brand values; you can make the next switch easily. And AI DevOps positions will be in more demand than AI itself.
Thank you! In Paypal, it's a software engineer position but still the main responsibilities are designing algorithm to filter out the fraud. So I think I am gonna turn it down.
