Hey guys. Generally speaking, which do you guys consider a better place to be? L5 AWS EC2, L4 GCP, E4 Facebook in Seattle? I’m assuming all TCs are around ~220k. I’m currently an SDE1 @ AWS EC2, and am speculating potential exit opportunities after promotion. Current TC: ~160k
E4 FB. Going to gcp would be like dating a 8/10 and downgrading to a 4/10z
Do you have to go to GCP? Can you go to any other org. Imo being a generalist hire at FB is the coolest option out there since you can choose any team you want after bootcamp which is so cool. You have 3 months to experiemnt different things and then choose your team.
I don't know why so much hatred towards gcp.i joined in May and I feel it's kinda fine. I feel people are smart and work is good. Maybe because lot of hiring is happening in cloud and quality might degrade
Well gcp rightly has a lot of catchup to do and no one knows whether it will be a major market player or not in the industry. But for sure there are a lot of interesting problems to solve and they are trying to keep the quality the same as before but some of it has definitely gone down.
Interview bar is still the same though. So quality of people should still be higher than Amazon. Also, I don’t think this hate towards Azure and GCP is for long. Pretty soon people will consider both pretty better than AWS.
Amazon
Why is there an opinion that GCP and/or Azure are “better”, and AWS is winning due to first mover advantage only?
So it seems people are saying Facebook E4 is a great place. I do have mobility within AWS, and Amazon as a whole. Does GCP not look as good on the resume as AWS? Also, is it possible to transfer internally once you’re in GCP to, say, Search?
No one cares if you are in GCP or Search, working at Google is good enough. Of course if you do good work it is better but unlike Amazon where AWS has great quality and not true for rest of Amazon, the bar at Google is more or less kept uniform.
You should try something new every so often and reInvent yourself.
