Recently received an initial offer from Amazon in VA for a 3+ years experience role:
Base:115K
Sign-on: 41K (24K year 1 / 17K year 2)
Stock: ~61K (17 RSU|5|15|40|40)

Do you think there would be room to negotiate the offer? If so what parts of the offer are flexible? Appreciate any input 👍

This role is supporting a region of data centers (primarily facilities and HVAC engineering ). There are varied MechE roles within AWS, but certainly not the majority of roles

Did you tell them how much you make now? What level?

What I have noticed is that recruiters seem to start an offer out at about 45th percentile, maybe 50th percentile for a given level. Ultimately, it depends on how badly you want the job, so if you want it bad, you probably would be scared to negotiate.

Also, i would recommend negotiating for more RSUs over base.

I was a bit naïve and disclosed my base pay instead of my total compensation. I think the role would have been open to L5/L4. Based on my offer and relatively lower experience I think I was place as L4. Also didn't help that my phone screening was a bit rough.

I'd like to take the job, mostly to get out of a dying industry and break into tech. I have other offers more local to where I currently live so not concerned about retraction if I negotiate.

I spoke to a friend who works there and he said the same about RSU. Probably the approach I'll take.

Just curious, what is that dying industry? IC engines?

  • True! Usually recruiters try to gauge it by checking if you have competing offers and you negotiating it up

I didn't have competing offers at the time (was early in the job search), but offers have come up since. Not sure if that's an angle I should work with negotiating. TBH I'm a relatively recent college grad and super unfamiliar with negotiating things like this
