Been at my current employer over 10 years and have it pretty easy but the CEO is intelligently incompetent and our product has been waning for some time with little pipeline of interest. I’ve been offered a good job at AWS but it’s global and I will have at least 8 international flights a year. Not that I need business class because I’m pompous but flying 12 hours from SFO to Europe sucks in coach. It’s also on MBO and no assurance of commission. I would be going for the better technology stack, the stock upside, the safer income (at least for two years with the signing bonus), and a more competitive company. I am concerned the boss I will have has too much on his plate, the culture is not warm from everything I hear, and they’ve already given me one indication of comp only to come in 40% lower at first but come up another 20% since. I’m currently only able to negotiate for more shares. Current AWS employees, please feel free to chime in on your thoughts.
FWIW, I think your employer has made some positive changes in the past year. Everyone I know who works for Amazon (AWS or .com) hates it but their TC is way better so they go back for a couple of years at a time.
Can you PM me please i want to talk.
Have them contact me. I will take that gig.
I think the sales culture is not too bad in AWS. You get training, support, whatever you need to get your job done. You are pretty much like a king with everyone gearing you up and your boss is only there to point you to the right directions when you ask. The sales team is growing like crazy, think about the pros and cons yourself. And as always, in Amazon you can always find another job within if you don’t like the one you are in.
Amazon flying their employees coach on long international flights is so disrespectful.
I wouldn’t take it just based on the coach travel alone. 8 times a year sounds a lot. it seems bad for your health..you can’t sleep properly on the plane in coach. I know I cannot function when I don’t sleep well and the rest of my health, especially mental goes down the drain. No amount of TC can buy your health back if you lose it.
You can try negotiating business class into your offer. It’s been done before and accepted at higher levels.
Even Blackburn, who is a SVP, complained about having to use his personal points to upgrade to business class for an international trip.
Usually you can fly in a day early to acclimate. After a handful of intl flights I expect if you fly a certain airline you will get upgraded.
