Verbally accepted L6 offer at AWS.

1 - I am wary of resigning from my current employer without an unconditional contract. I don't have anything to hide, but you never know. What kind of checks do they complete?

2 - I haven't given any references and also am wary of someone contacting employer asking for dates of employment for example ahead actually telling employer, is this likely?

3 -Is there such thing as an unconditional offer, or are they always checking something?

What ic3cream said. Background checks typically come after you’ve signed an offer.

Not sure who Amazon used for checks but you typically can ask them not to contact your past employers and provide them with evidence of your employment dates yourself (offer letters, w2s, etc).

It’s at-will employment, OP. They or you can withdraw at any time. Is that likely to happen? No. But it could happen; there’s no guarantee against that small possibility. I wouldn’t stress about it.

You'll get a login to fill out background stuff after accepting. Be clear with your recruiter that you want it to clear prior to giving notice, this is common and not a big deal. I didn't give notice until after BG.

Mine didn't contact references or verify anything, it was strictly a criminal background check.

The background check is always cause of concern for many. I remember I used to have bad credit and thought that they would ax me for it. Today most background checks are heavily automated and it’s very rare that companies actually call other companies to confirm employment dates. Even degree confirmations are automated these days. I wouldn’t worry too much about it, but like other have said, simply don’t quit until you’re it! 😂

Don’t resign until you sign the offer letter and have a confirmed start date. It’s that simple.
