Guys, if you had two offers with similar compensaton packages, would you go with IBM or AWS? I want a company where I can learn and grow but I also have a family so I dont want to be working weekends, for example. Something tells me that life at IBM (likely under B9) will be much easier than at AWS... true? #offer #tech
No way IBM is able to match an AWS offer
Thank you for the honesty and help. Do you say that from a salary perspective or from a career/brand in your resume perspective?
Both
Do you have a family/other commitments? That would be the main reason to join IBM. AWS will be way fewer dollars/hour worked but once you have worked at AWS, you’ll be able to thrive anywhere.
Yes, family with little kids... that is what makes IBM interesting. I wonder if my kid would tell me “dad, go for AWS, I won’t see you as much for a couple of years but then we will all enjoy the effort in the next decades”. Thoughts?
Yeah that’s fine, but just remember that they will barely see you for the next 2-4 years you stay at AWS. It’s not worth it to go to AWS for just 6 months to a year
Depends entirely on team in AWS and team at IBM. Many IBMers on here can give you insight if you disclose.
Agree. I am thinking on asking for a final call with the hiring manager at AWS to clarify work and promotion expectations. Makes sense?
Well be prepared for the HM to lie. Your better option would be to request a conversation with someone who would be your peer.
For AWS, clarify your work expectations with your manager beforehand. Talk to a peer as well, if possible. I've worked with folk who are strictly 9-5, except for the days when they're on-call, and they managed to do fine. They were focused and efficient when they did work so they managed to get most things done. Their career growth could have been faster had they worked more but they made the tradeoff based on what's important to them.
I worked at Amazon for 5+ years. It was hard work but there is no better place to learn about cloud, scalable businesses, and growth mindset. I know people who tried IBM, thinking it would be better WLB, and they were gone in 2-3 years due to politics or general frustration. I'd choose AWS for a few years and you will have a ticket anywhere.
You moved to Intuit after Amazon?
Depends more on the team you join since they are both huge companies. There’s good places to be found in both IBM and Amazon.
If the TC really is similar, and considering you have a family, I would pick IBM and then just chill until you retire. Source: I hopped from IBM to AMZ.

How common is it actually to earn more than 300K TC?
WLB? Sure, IBM rocks. But kiss your career goodbye.
Even if it is IBM Cloud team? I think “I would be going from Dell to IBM, that is still a move upwards”. But do you think AWS is just miles ahead of IBM? How much do you value an offer from AWS? Is it a once in a lifetime opportunity or I can say no and try AWS in two years if I want to?
Ibm cloud looooll ... take AWS offer, plan working for at least 2 years, then try microsoft or any other for better wlb maybe Intuit to lol... AWS will give you great learning and growth opportunities ... You asked if AWS is miles ahead of IBM cloud, let me tell you it’s miles ahead of google cloud gcp😁
